Sunflower Painting Like Artist Vincent Van Gogh

We're thrilled to introduce you to an engaging and creative activity that you and your child can enjoy together at home: Sunflower Painting! This project is inspired by Vincent van Gogh's iconic painting of sunflowers and encourages children to reinterpret the masterpiece in their own unique way.

Activity Overview

Objective:  To create a personalized interpretation of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers painting using simple materials and techniques.

Materials Needed:

Printout of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers painting (easily found online) or as above

  • Canvas or sturdy paper for painting

  • Paintbrushes (various sizes or sponges or finger painting)

  • Acrylic or tempera paints (yellow, brown, green, and additional colors as desired)

  • Palette or disposable plates for mixing colors

  • Water cups

  • Paper towels or cloth for cleaning brushes

Duration: Approximately 60-90 minutes, depending on the child's pace and engagement.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Workspace: Cover your work area with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect it from paint spills. Set up all the materials within easy reach.

  2. . Print and Discuss the Painting: Print out a copy of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers painting and show it to your child. Take a moment to admire the artwork together and discuss the colors, shapes, and textures they see.

  3. Reinterpret the Painting:

  • Encourage your child to use their imagination and creativity to reinterpret the Sunflowers painting in their own style. They can experiment with different colors, brush strokes, and compositions to make the painting their own.

  • Provide guidance and suggestions as needed, but allow your child to take the lead in expressing their artistic vision.

  • Start by sketching the basic outlines of the sunflowers, vase, and background on the canvas or paper.

  • Guide your child in mixing paint colors to match those used in the original painting or let them choose their own color palette.

  • Encourage them to layer paint and add texture to mimic van Gogh's expressive brushwork.

  • Remember to have fun and enjoy the creative process together!

5. Let it Dry: Allow the painting to dry completely before displaying it or adding any finishing touches.

6. Reflect and Discuss: After completing the painting, take some time to reflect on the experience with your child. Ask them about their favorite part of the activity and what they enjoyed most about creating their own version of van Gogh's Sunflowers.
