Get ready for a creative and expressive adventure with your children aged 5-11 as they embark on a journey of self-discovery through the magic of paper mask making! This engaging activity not only encourages artistic expression but also provides a playful way for children to explore a range of emotions.

Materials Needed:

2. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

3. Scissors

4. Glue or tape

5. Craft sticks or elastic cord

6. Hole punch (optional)

7. Stickers, googly eyes, or other embellishments (optional)

Activity Overview:

Step 1: Introduce Emotions

Begin by discussing different emotions with your child. Talk about happy, sad, surprised, angry, and other feelings. Help them understand the facial expressions associated with each emotion.

Step 2: Mask Designing

- Provide construction paper or cardstock for the masks. Encourage your child to choose colors that represent different emotions.

- Using markers, crayons, or colored pencils, have them draw facial expressions on the paper to match specific emotions. This could include happy smiles, sad frowns, surprised eyes, etc.

Step 3: Cutting and Assembling

- Assist your child in cutting out the mask shapes based on their designs. Make sure to include eye holes for visibility.

- If creating full-face masks, cut out the eye holes and make a small slit on each side for attaching craft sticks. If creating half-face masks, cut along the centerline of the mask.

Step 4: Decorating

- Let your child unleash their creativity by decorating the masks further. They can use stickers, googly eyes, or other embellishments to add personality to each mask.

Step 5: Adding Handles

- If creating full-face masks, attach craft sticks to the back of the masks using glue or tape.

- If creating half-face masks, punch holes on each side and thread elastic cord through, tying knots to secure.

Step 6: Role Play and Exploration

Encourage your child to put on their masks and explore different emotions through role-playing. Ask them to express how they feel while wearing each mask and encourage storytelling or dramatic play.
